Sensei Gerald Turner, 4th Dan
Sensei Gerald Turner of Fresno, California. Sensei Turner is a Shotokan practitioner that began training in the early 1970's under the late Sensei Robert Halliburton in Fresno, CA. Sensei Halliburton was a 7th Dan student under Master Hirokazu Kanazawa and was at that time the highest ranking American under this well known Japanese master and founder of Shotokan Karate International (SKI). Sensei Turner's teacher passed away in 2008 and although he has trained briefly with different instructors over the years, Sensei Turner has remained loyal to Sensei Halliburton's teachings and continues to wear the patch of his teacher's school in Fresno, Way of Japan.
Gerald Turner and ATAMA President Sid Rayford met each other in 1980 while they were both attending Fresno City College. The two of them remember talking to each other about training in karate almost 40 years ago and the two of them also lost their instructors to cancer in the same year. Sensei Gerald Turner is an ATAMA registered 4th Dan in Shotokan Karate and he is also known locally as one of the very best center judges in open tournament sparring.
